CAMEROON MISSION Rev. Fr. Linus Egbeji (Mission Superior) Cameroon occupies a very privileged position, economically and socially among the countries of central Africa. Divided into 10 geo-political Regions for administrative purposes, the projected population, though speculative, presently stands at close to 20 million people. It is a bilingual country having adopted two official languages, English and French. This particularly places Cameroon in a position of great political strength when it comes to diplomatic and cultural relations with other countries. Cameroon is also a nation of great ethnic diversity and, like many other African countries; she is a melting pot of many religions. Quite unlike anywhere else in Africa, the various religions have a record of peaceful co-habitation or co-existence here. Among the very first class of priests ordained for the M.S.P., some were to work in the diocese of Buea, Cameroon. They worked under the pastoral leadership of His Lordship, Bishop Pius Suh Awa now Emeritus bishop of Buea. Our priests worked closely with the local clergy in various parishes of the diocese. In the early 1990s negotiations were completed with the diocesese of Ngaoundere to have MSP priests work with them. Although Ngaoundere happens to fall within one of predominantly French speaking regions of Cameroon, some of our brothers worked here successfully until the Mission was formally closed by the Society administration due to difficulties experienced at the time. Notable among those who have worked in the Cameroon mission in the late 80s and early 1990s are Fr. Anselm Umoren, the present Superior General, Fr. Andrew Toyinbo, our former Vicar General, Frs. Charles Atuah, Elesius Ibeh, Emmanuel Isi; Ambrose Udeze, Bryan Okon, Mathias Selemobri and others. In the Archdiocese of Douala, the MSP presence was perceived within the 1993/94 pastoral year. With the arrival of Fr. Alfred Umagu who held brief for Fr. Noel Effiong for about half a year. The other early arrival to Douala was Fr. Anselm Eke. Fr. Noel Effiong worked in the Holy Trinity Parish while Fr. Anselm Eke led the Anglophone Community to the creation and erection of the St. Joseph Parish, Bonaberi – Douala. No doubt, MSP presence has remained very strong and pastorally viable in these two dioceses, Buea and Douala. Presently, we have a total of six priests working in the mission. Two are in the diocese of Buea and four in the Archdiocese of Douala. The list below shows the names and contacts of the MSP brothers in Cameroon as at May, 2010. A.)
